ThreadED's Class of 2020 Scholars Forge AheadThis July, ThreadED attended our fourth uAspire Last Dollar Scholarship event via Zoom. We missed the chance to connect with our scholars face to face, but it was incredibly inspiring to “meet” these four students and learn where they are going and what they want to do. It was a hopeful reminder for us of the reason we do what we do. We will meet ThreadED's four other upperclassmen scholarship recipients in the weeks ahead and look forward to sharing their stories with you.
This year’s rising freshman ThreadED Scholars are clockwise from top left: Ludie B., a graduate of the Edward M. Kennedy Academy for Health Careers, will attend Bunker HIll Community College. Alex T., who graduated from Josiah Quincy Upper School, is headed to UMass Amherst. Karen L., who graduated from the Boston Community Leadership Academy will attend Bunker Hill Community College. Joel B., a graduate of the Community Academy of Health and Science, is headed to Mass College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences. Congratulations all and best of luck to you! ThreadED had two great events during April and May. In one week, the organization sold enough donated goodies to fund six scholarships this summer. Thanks to everyone who: ~ Donated clothing ~ Gave time ~ Offered ideas ~Told their friends... ~ And shopped! Special thanks to our lead volunteer Mindy S. as well as Margaret W., Martha S., Jo D., Maggie N., Tricia B., Jen F. and Sharon D. We were delighted to use space donated by Mark Development for the three day pop up in Newtonville. ThreadED is already planning a fall pop up sale for the end of September, so stay tuned for details. Best way to be in the know? Email us at [email protected] and we will add you to our mailing list. ThreadED is thrilled to be part of eBay's inaugural Shine Awards contest! ThreadED has been chosen as one of three finalists for eBay’s Shine Award for Small Businesses in the Charitable Business category. Out of 1300 total applicants, ThreadED is very excited to be one of 15 finalists! The finalists will all be profiled on eBay’s website and the winner will be determined by online voting from June 20th to July 11th. Then we head to Las Vegas to learn if ThreadED is chosen as a winner! Should ThreadED be determined the winner in the Charitable business category, we will receive $5,000 as well as marketing and outreach support for the next year. Please help ThreadED by voting early and often during that time period. We will send you the voting links, as well as post them to our website and Facebook page. In the meantime, check out the finalists at http://for-business.ebay.com/tags/ebay-shine-awards Taking Care of Business... Meet Alex, ThreadED's new website guru! Alex is a rising sophomore at Connecticut College, where he studies Computer Science. Alex has been essential to the revamping of ThreadED's website, which will include an entirely new design and even an online store! The new and improved website is still under construction, but will be up and running very soon. We're very excited to see the final product! Just for Kids... ThreadED is going on the road with clothing for its smallest customers! We are trying out a children's sale in Belmont. We're excited to launch this new part of ThreadED! If you (or anyone you know) has a venue appropriate for a children's sale, please let us know- and if you have any children's clothing that you'd like to donate, we'd be happy to accept any and all donations! This summer, ThreadED will present uAspire, a Boston nonprofit, with our first donation funded by sales and direct contributions. The gift will support uAspire's Last Dollar Scholarship, which helps students fill that final, challenging gap between their financial aid package and their cost of attending college in the coming year. uAspire is a Boston-based national nonprofit that has been providing one-on-one college affordability counseling to disadvantaged students for more than thirty years. Look for updates about our initial gift in the next newsletter and on ThreadED's website and Facebook page. Taking Care of Business... ThreadED will have three interns this summer focusing on communicating with more diverse audiences, researching sales channels and increasing donations. Caryn, a rising University of Michigan sophomore (pictured below) is helping us use social media to more effectively share our mission and opportunities to help the organization. Only two days into her internship, she developed a great idea to run a prom dress collection drive. Thank you
We want to express our thanks to Its Your Move of Natick, for three generous clothing donations over the past six months. These contributions have been a great catalyst to get ThreadED rolling.
